MOTO Z REVIEW

Motorola Mobility is one of several first-wave mobile phone manufacturers that have blinked out of independent existence over the past few years; unable to compete in a cut-throat, oversaturated, highly commoditised market. Unlike some of its less fortunate former rivals though, its brand and legacy are living on under Lenovo's leadership. The Moto product portfolio became something of a showcase for pure, unmodified Android when the company was directly under Google's leadership, and sensing a good thing, Lenovo has largely left things as they were and continued down the same path.
A few things have changed in terms of branding and segmentation, which shows that sticking to your roots doesn't mean stagnating. The much-loved premium Moto X series is now called Moto Z, and has a whole new identity based around snap-on accessories. LG tried a similar approach with its G5 (Review) flagship earlier this year, but inelegant implementation and a limited number of accessories haven't helped make this a must-have feature, so let's hope that Lenovo and Motorola's combined design expertise has done better.
Moto Z look and feel
The new Moto Z is a slab of metal and glass, and we wouldn't have accepted anything less at this price point. That said, it doesn't have the wow factor of some of its contemporaries, such as Samsung's Galaxy S7 (Review) or even the current crop of iPhones, with their curved glass and ultra-minimalist lines. That's partly because of the prominent earpiece, front camera and flash, Moto branding, and fingerprint sensor on the front face.
The Moto Z seems a bit taller than necessary, with a lot of chin-space below the screen. There's a square-shaped fingerprint sensor here with a Moto logo above it, leaving a lot of blank space on either side. The sensor looks and seems like a Home button, but in fact it isn't - you have the standard on-screen Android controls for navigation, and the sensor doesn't do anything but lock and unlock the screen. Throughout our time with the Moto Z, we kept reaching for it thinking it was a Home button, only to unintentionally lock the phone when we least wanted to.

The sides of the phone are formed into a continuous metal frame. The left is blank, the top has only the hybrid SIM tray, the bottom has a USB Type-C port, and there's no 3.5mm audio socket. The power and volume buttons are on the right and are all very small, stubby and hard to tell apart, other than a slight texture on the power button.
Unlike most phones, the most interesting part of the Moto Z is its rear. This is where all the modular magic happens. On its own, the phone is pretty thin with a protruding disc near the top that houses the camera lens and dual-LED flash. Lower down, you'll see a wide strip of metallic contact points for the assorted "Motomods", which snap onto the phone's rear magnetically. When you aren't using a mod, you can pop on a functionless "style shell" that covers the contacts and adds some thickness to the phone, coming up flush with the camera bump.

You can certainly use the phone without any mods or shells attached, but it's uncomfortable to hold because of sharp edges. Our review unit came with a wood-grain style shell reminiscent of previous Moto phones. Assorted colours and textures are available so you can change the look of your Moto Z whenever you feel like. The shell really improved the grip of our phone, and we didn't mind the added thickness at all.
Motorola is advertising four mods at launch time: an extended battery developed by Incipio, a more powerful camera with Hasselblad's name on it, a speaker from JBL, and a projector that seems to have been created in-house. There's clearly been an effort to tie up with external companies and bring their expertise to Moto Z users, and the company promises that more are to come. Even better, the same mods already work with the Moto Z Play, and future models should be compatible. This is a much stronger showing than LG, which still has just one G5 "friend" - a simple camera grip with an additional battery - available in India.

The Moto Z's spec sheet is pretty impressive, but perhaps not enough to distance itself from lower-priced phones such as the OnePlus 3 and Asus ZenFone 3. There's a quad-core 1.8GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor with integrated Adreno 530 graphics, 4GB of RAM, and a generous 64GB of storage. MicroSD cards of up to 2TB (theoretical) are supported, but at the cost of a second SIM because of the space-saving hybrid SIM design.

The screen is a standard 5.5 inches diagonally, but it has a resolution of 1440x2560 which is where most low-priced "flagship killers" hold back. Sure, you don't exactly suffer with 1080x1920 at this size, but more is always better, and the density of 535ppi makes for some extremely sharp images. The battery comes in at 2600mAh, and Motorola promises up to 7 hours of power with just 15 minutes of charging.
The rear camera has a 13-megapixel sensor, laser autofocus, and f/1.8 aperture, but its most interesting spec is optical image stabilisation, which is uncommon on phones at any price level. The front camera is a more modest 5-megapixel unit but also has a wide-angle lens, its own flash, and a larger sensor for increased low-light performance.
There's Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.1, NFC, A-GPS, and a number of motion and environmental sensors. You get LTE support on Indian bands but there's no mention of VoLTE. The Moto Z is also conspicuously absent from this list and we can only hope that VoLTE can be implemented with a software update.
Android 6.0.1 runs with virtually no customisations, which is a good thing for the most part. Along with ugly skins and bloatware, we've seen a lot genuinely useful third-party improvements. We miss simple things that are standard on most other phones, such as a battery percentage indicator.
In particular, we feel that not being able to use the fingerprint sensor to trigger different actions or secure specific files and apps is a missed opportunity for the Moto Z. The sensor is not a button, so it's triggered as soon as you touch the surface. You can wake the phone from standby and unlock it in one motion with an enrolled fingerprint, but when the phone is in use, touching the sensor will immediately lock it regardless of finger you use. That makes inadvertent touches all the more frustrating.
The Moto Z's biggest software tweak is the Active Display feature, which we've seen on previous Motorola phones. When the Moto Z is in standby and you wave your hand over the front or pull it out of a pocket, a low-power monochrome readout will show you the time and icons denoting missed notifications. It's interactive, so you can tap to see the contents of your notifications or launch into the apps that generated them.
Image result for moto zThere are some gesture and voice controls. You can quickly launch into the camera app, even from standby, with a double-flick of the wrist. We found this quite useful and it became a habit without us even realising it. Similarly, a double-chop motion triggers the flashlight. The voice feature essentially lets you set your own phrase to trigger a Google voice search, and can also read out messages text messages if you let it.
Motorola has added only one app of its own, simply titled Moto. It has controls for the Active Display, gestures, and voice assistant. There's an icon labelled Moto Mods but it's a link to a Web page, not a control app as we first guessed.
Moto Z performance
Like most phones with screens this large, the Moto Z is a bit unwieldy. Grip and comfort are definitely improved when the style shell is attached. That extra padding at the rear also helps when the phone gets hot, which does happen. Both the front and rear of the lower half get quite toasty within minutes of playing a 3D game or using the camera.
Videos of all formats played perfectly well. The screen is bright and vibrant, even under harsh sunlight. The single built-in speaker is decent for games and surprisingly clear for voices in videos, though music doesn't sound particularly rich. The headphones included in the box sound decent but are made of hard plastic and have a rather uncomfortable fit.
As far as general performance is concerned, nothing we did caused the Moto Z to slow down at all. We were quite happy even with several large apps running in the background and loads of browser tabs open. We scored 3,974 in Geekbench's multi-core CPU test, and AnTuTu gave us 132,196. Graphics tests also did really well, with 25,038 in 3DMark's Ice Storm Unlimited test and 52fps in GFXBench
Motorola has replaced the default camera app, and the one on the Moto Z is pretty easy to get started with. There's a pro mode with controls for focus, white balance, ISO, shutter speed, and exposure compensation. Video and slow motion are their own modes. The app can also detect and handle bar codes, QR codes, and business cards. If the app is running, the same double-twist gesture that launches it from anywhere switches between the front and back cameras. The settings menu is fairly sparse but we were surprised to see that photos are cropped to 16:9 by default, for an effective 9.7-megapixel resolution as opposed to the sensor's actual capability of 13 megapixels at 4:3.
We found photo quality to be highly impressive. Starting with photos taken in daylight, we were happy to find that fine details on objects were captured well even at a distance. Some textures were a bit lacking and autofocus was sometimes an issue, but overall quality is one of the things that helps the Moto Z justify its price.
Night-time shots also came out remarkably well - there was certainly noise and some motion blur, but we got a lot of usable shots, and you won't have any problem unless you zoom in to full size. Video is recorded at 1080p30 by default but you can go up to 1080p60 and even 4K30. The clips we took were crisp and bright, with decent motion and audio. The front camera is quite capable, but we found the flash too powerful for arm's-length range, resulting in more than one shot of us with our eyes reflexively jammed shut. Given how good the built-in camera is, we're intrigued by the possibilities presented by the Hasselblad mod - our review of that accessory is coming up soon.
 Battery life was disappointing at first; far below Motorola's claimed 12 hours of usage. Our video loop test consistently returned disappointing results, so we asked the company to send across a second unit to test. This one did far better, running for 13 hours, 4 minutes. We hope that the strange behaviour was isolated to the one review unit we first received. Outside of formal tests, the phone seemed to get through a full day just fine, even with a bit of gaming and lots of video streaming over LTE and Wi-Fi. Charging is pretty quick - we got up to 20 percent in under 15 minutes, and 45 percent in 30 minutes.
Verdict
Motorola's take on a modular smartphone is definitely a lot stronger than any other we've seen before. Even without considering the mods, the new Moto Z is a powerful, stylish phone with a lot to offer. Almost everything about it looks good and works well. This is a great phone for those who want style and power, but aren't necessarily going to run heavy apps all the time. However, it does have a few problems, including the awkward fingerprint sensor and the fact that it can get rather hot. It's also more expensive than the OnePlus 3 and ZenFone 3 - and that's before factoring in the cost of mods. If none of the mods appeal to you, then it might not be worth paying so much more just to gain the ability to use them, and you might want to look at the slicker Samsung Galaxy S7 instead.

Google Pixel and Pixel XL First Impressions

A strong statement of intent and a gazillion leaks later, they are finally here - the Pixel and Pixel XL are the first Google-branded smartphones. As evident from the launch event in San Francisco on Tuesday, Google is positioning the Pixel smartphones against Apple’s iPhone, at the premium-end of the segment, though some believe the phones may end up hurting the likes of Samsung instead. We spent some hands on time with the Pixel and Pixel XL at the demo area after the event and here are our first impressions.
In terms of industrial design, there’s nothing path breaking about the new Pixel phones, but that shouldn’t bother anyone. The physical similarities to the iPhone are evident at first glance, but like most Android phones the screen-to-body ratio of the Pixel XL, for example, is much better than the iPhone 7 Plus, making the former - and indeed most Android phones - a much more manageable overall size, despite sporting the same display size.
There seems to be plenty of excitement around the Really Blue colour, but it’s safe to say we didn’t like the colour at all. The Quite Black is more to our taste, and the Very Silver is a safe pick if you like white bezels for some strange reason, but then we are known to be rather conservative in our picks and your mileage may vary. Of course if you are reading this in India, the Really Blue won’t even be an option for you, so you can stop judging us for our taste.
Image result for google pixelAs Gadgets 360 had reported back in August, the Google Assistant is one of the headline features of the new Pixel phones. Think of the Google Assistant as a cross between Now on Tap and Apple’s Siri, backed by the ton of information collected by Google’s Knowledge Graph. Google as part of its presentation showed off the Now on Tap-like capabilities of Assistant to detect what’s on screen, and say, suggest restaurants when you are chatting about going out for lunch with someone. We used the voice-activated mode during our hands on to test out the latter. You can trigger the voice-based assistant by long pressing the home button, and as we’ve come to expect from Google, the voice recognition worked flawlessly pretty much all the time, and we got relevant answers to our queries.
With the Google Assistant also powering Google Home, one of the three Home-themed devices unveiled at Tuesday’s event, it’s clear Google wants us to become comfortable talking to our devices. While there are obvious challenges in doing that - especially when you are at a public place - Google has earlier shared that 20 percent of search queries are already voice searches on mobile, and with technologies like Google Assistant making our devices getting better at understanding the context of our queries, this number will only rise.

In what’s likely to increase friction with OEMs that build Android phones, the Google Pixel and Google Pixel XL get a bunch of other exclusive software features. Google executives downplayed suggestions this will lead to any kind of problems, insisting Google is now like any other OEM that uses its own launcher with a bunch of other software customisations on top. However, we have a feeling this will become a sore point with companies like Samsung, Motorola, and others sooner rather than later, especially since there’s no timeline on when big new features like the Google Assistant will find their way back to the core Android project.
Apart from Assistant, Google spent a decent amount of time during the event talking about the camera inside the Pixel and Pixel XL. Unlike Apple and, more recently, Xiaomi products where the bigger phone in the lineup also gets a better camera, Google says the Pixel and Pixel XL are exactly the same apart from the display, battery size, and, of course, the physical dimensions. Google claims the Pixel phones get a DxOMark rating of 89, the “highest ever for a smartphone”. We’ll reserve our judgement on the camera’s performance until our review, but we can safely say the new camera app feels pretty fast.

Micromax Unite 4 Pro Review

Micromax has experimented with phones in multiple price segments, either directly or through its sister company, Yu Televentures. Its Unite series, with a multi-language interface, has been extremely successful.
The Unite 4 Pro that we’re reviewing today is part of a new duo which was launched a few months back. The smartphone is not simply targeted at budget conscious buyers, but more specifically, the non-English speaking population across India who could benefit from its customised OS.

Micromax seems to have gotten its act together when it comes to designing smartphones, as the Unite 4 Pro is a good looking model. The design isn't groundbreaking, and in many ways, it could pass off for any of the current crop of Chinese offerings if not for the company's logo. The metal back gives it a slightly premium look, which we always welcome.

The 5-inch IPS display has good colour reproduction and viewing angles but it picks up smudges and fingerprints very easily, and is a nightmare to keep clean. The HD resolution on a screen this size is not bad for viewing text and pictures. Brightness is good and we didn’t have problems using this phone outdoors.
The phone feels a bit taller than than it should be due to the wasted space below the display. It seems like there should be capacitive buttons there, except that Micromax has gone with onscreen buttons.
The metal rear cover is removable, which helps conceal the SIM slots, microSD card slot (with support for cards up to 32GB capacity) and the battery, which is non-removable. The cover is a bit tricky to open and our unit put up a real fight before we managed to get it off. There’s a circular fingerprint sensor around the back, along with the speaker and camera module.
The Unite 4 Pro ships with a standard 7.5W adapter, a data cable, and instruction leaflets. Overall, we like the design and build of this device. Its size and shape also make it comfortable to use on the move, even with one hand.

Micromax has MediaTek in favour of a quad-core SoC from Spreadtrum (SC9832). The chip consists of four ARM Cortex-A7 cores running at 1.3GHz and a Mali-400 GPU pulling of graphics duty. It’s not a great processor to be honest; Android runs a bit sluggishly at times, and this is also reflected in the benchmark tests. AnTuTu returned a score of 22,445 while 3DMark Ice Storm gave us 3,588 points, both of which are lower than what a basic MediaTek SoC (like the MT6735P) can achieve.
There’s 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, FM radio, and USB OTG. Both SIM slots support 4G LTE on Band 3, 5, and 40. However, VoLTE support seems to be missing.
What makes the Unite 4 Pro unique is that it comes with Indus OS 2.0, a 'regional OS' built on top of Android, which Micromax uses in its other models including the Canvas and Bolt lines. In its latest iteration, the OS supports a total of 12 regional languages, which could make phones more approachable for people who are not accustomed to the English language.
The OS is smartly designed, as only part of the launcher and a few apps (like SMS) are customised, while the rest is pretty much stock Android. During initial setup, you can select your primary language and your mother tongue (or any other language you're comfortable with), and easily swap between the two.
This goes beyond just changing the language. Indus Swipe will translate or transliterate between English and your native language in the SMS app, depending on which way you swipe. This feature only works with the SMS app although you will get regional alternatives to the words you type in any app using the Indus keyboard.
Indus Reader is text-to-speech platform that lets you hear text in your selected language (currently supports nine languages). The Indus keyboard has integrated native language word prediction and autocorrection for all languages. The cool thing is you can type in English and then transliterate your message before sending it, which is helpful. The translation from English to your native language is not always perfect with complex sentences, but it works well for quick responses.
Another unique feature is App Bazaar which shows you apps in your native language and also lets you buy apps through carrier billing. This could be useful for those who don’t want to bother with using credit cards to buy apps. Currently, only Airtel, Idea, and Vodafone are supported
Micromax apps like M!Account, M!Live, and App Centre cannot be uninstalled but you can get rid of the host of other third-party apps that include shopping apps like Snapdeal and Amazon; Hike messenger; a couple of trial games; Dailyhunt; Opera; and Citrus Cube for paying utility bills.

The Unite 4 Pro is a good phone to live with thanks to the comfortable form factor and the fact that it doesn’t heat up during everyday use. General performance is not terrible but the SoC isn’t very capable of multitasking, which is where you’ll encounter stutter and lag. App loading times aren’t very good either. An example of this is when we were trying to set up the fingerprint sensor and the phone refused to begin the registration process simply because there were apps downloading in the background.
Speaking of the fingerprint sensor, it’s slow to respond and not terribly accurate. We encountered many misses during our usage. The phone manages to handle full-HD video playback but audio quality is below average. The speaker is decently loud for alerts but that’s about it. Even with aftermarket earphones, the audio quality is well below average. The Gaana music streaming app is the default music player for local audio files.
The rear 8-megapixel camera is fairly quick to focus in daylight, and pictures retain good colours. The app tends to over-sharpen images, which is noticeable once you zoom in. Focusing speed drops in low-light and indoor scenarios, along with the level of detail, however, pictures don’t have as much noise as we expected them to. There is quite a bit of shutter lag though, so unless your hands are really steady, you'll end up with blurry pictures.
Video recording maxes out at 1080p for the rear camera and 480p for the front 5-megapixel camera. Selfies come out decently well, provided the lighting is good. The camera app is essentially the Google Camera app so it’s very simple to use with basic features like HDR and Panorama present.
Coming to battery life, the phone packs in a 3900mAh battery which ran for 13 hours and 14 minutes in our video loop test, which is very good. We’re surprised it didn’t last longer considering the low-power SoC in use. With regular mixed usage with 4G, we easily went beyond a day. Charging is painfully slow, and you're looking at least five hours before the battery is full.
Verdict
The Micromax Unite 4 Pro will cost you Rs. 7,999, which feels expensive considering the phone isn’t very good when you look at it as a whole. It does certain things very well like manage battery life. It also has a very user-friendly OS and a decent design and build. The native language integration is very well done, and is easily this phone's defining feature.
However, the Unite 4 Pro is very underpowered, especially at this price point, and therefore doesn’t provide the best Android experience. Other issues like weak audio performance, the finicky fingerprint reader and average camera quality make it tough to recommend.
A price correction could make this phone more worth considering, except if the language features are that important to you. If not, there are less expensive options from Micromax or any of its competitors.

Our Verdict


Lenovo IdeaPad 500 is a complete multimedia laptop for users that need a little bit of everything. It does have a powerful hardware inside but lacks in a few important sectors like the average display and battery backup. If features like the RealSense and the JBL speakers coupled with Dolby audio can cover up for what it lacks, this one is definitely worth considering, given its attractive selling price

Lenovo Ideapad 500-15ISK: Detailed Review

The Lenovo IdeaPad 500 could be easily misunderstood to have a weak construction. One has to hold it to realise its superior build quality and let us make it clear, Lenovo has used no inferior quality plastic on the outside. But that’s just on the outside. On the inside Lenovo has made little compromise as the IdeaPad 500 sports an appealing brushed aluminium body and silver accents running along the sides giving it a premium feel.
The laptop sports an ergonomic design, weighing just over 2 kg. The hinges are sturdy and hold the screen pretty well, and the overall construction is quite good. 
The ldeaPad 500 sports a 15.6-inch Full HD display which is a TN panel and not an IPS one. We were not particularly impressed by the screen’s washed out colour and average brightness. Trying to compensate, the IdeaPad 500’s screen was sharp, replicating detail imagery. 
During our performance tests, PCMark 8 returned a score of 3907, making the IdeaPad 500 one of the top performers in our mainstream category. However, gaming performance is where the laptop falls short. Casual gamers should be able to get light gaming sessions at low settings on the IdeaPad 500. We did not notice any heating issues and it was quite impressive to see the laptop staying cool as well as super silent. In our battery test, the laptop could survive over 3 hours, which is quite good. 
Lenovo’s full size island type keyboard is one of the best features that this laptop can boast. The chiclet keyboard comes with curved keys, something thatLenovo has been very consistent with. Long typing sessions are a breeze on this keyboard owing to its tactile feedback and adequate key travel. The keys are wide, comfortably placed but you will have to make do with just one level of backlit support. The multi-gesture trackpad, too, is smooth to use and quite precise. It comes with a matte finish and separate section that consists of the left and the right click. 
The HD webcam on the IdeaPad 500 features Intel’s RealSense 3D technology that recognises faces and gestures in order to interact with your laptop. You could use it to change the backgrounds and add effects in real time while you are using the webcam or use gestures to command the laptop to do perform specific actions, including signing into apps using your face as the pass key. It’s a nice touch, something that you don’t see on many machines, further boosting the laptop’s mainstream appeal.
Perhaps the most outstanding aspect of the IdeaPad 500 are its two bottom-facing JBL speakers that are quite loud when coupled with Dolby audio presets. The Dolby Audio comes with a number of presets such as Dynamic, Music, Movie, Game, Voice that allows you to switch the audio output according to your preference. Once enabled, the Dolby Audio app makes sure it impresses with its audio output, when compared to other laptops. 
Along with an audio-enhancing app, Lenovo has bundled along various other software, that they consider to be utility, such as a Windows 10 companion, a photo manager and a host of apps from its DoIT series.  

Verdict

Overall, the Lenovo IdeaPad 500 is a complete multimedia laptop for users that need a little bit of everything. It does have a powerful hardware inside but lacks in a few important sectors like the average display and battery backup. If features like the RealSense and the JBL speakers coupled with Dolby audio can cover up for what it lacks, this one is definitely worth considering, given its attractive selling price.

Asus ZenFone 3 ZE520KL Review

The Asus Zenfone 3 has its moments, but it's not the complete package we hoped for. It's not Asus' best work, however, you may still consider this smartphone.

At Rs. 27,999, the Asus Zenfone 3 is not the best smartphone to buy for those looking for a whole package. You can consider this smartphone for its battery, and even the camera is above average, but as a complete smartphone, the Zenfone 3 is well behind the OnePlus 3 and LeEco Le Max 2.

Asus ZenFone 3 ZE520KL: Detailed Review

Momentum is an important aspect of selling in the smartphone market today. Brand perceptions are set really easily, and changing them can be a gigantic task. Brands like Asus ruled the roost last year, outshining many with their value for money smartphones. The Asus Zenfone 2 was the first phone to bring 4GB of RAM to smartphones, while the company also brought a laser AF camera system to the budget range. Barring the fact that Asus’ product nomenclature was obscenely confusing, it seemed that the company could do no wrong.
It’s 2016, and after a brief break, Asus is back. The Zenfone 3 was announced at Computex 2016, and as it was last year, Asus is hitting multiple price segments. However, thanks to Intel’s exit from the mobile SoC market, Asus can no longer keep up its pricing. The company may not have said it officially, but adding Qualcomm’s chipsets have obviously raised the prices, and no one’s really happy about that.
Do high prices mean bad phones, though? The answer to that would be no. Also, Intel’s exit gave Asus the unique opportunity to position itself alongside the Samsung’s and Apple’s of the world, which is exactly what the entire Zenfone 3 line is.
